Shane,

I'm not exactly thrilled with Obama myself but you've lost me as a reader. The N word is never appropriate and I find it highly offensive. I'm so fucking dissapointed in you. I truly thought you were above this kind of shit. You're over O and I, you.

I wish you peace.

God, I don't get the anom posters. For real. You do realize that posting under an anom name discredits your points, especially in a public topic such as this one, right?

ANYWAY, I agree with what you said yet let's give it time and decide later. The tasks Obama has had to take on are unreal. These tasks cannot and will not be fixed any time soon. I am not sure our 'forefathers' imagined the (future) historical complexities or magnitude of it all. So that, combined with all the recently accumulated wreckage, it's fucked for a while.

Disney Land, anyone?~

Let's wait and see what Poppa has to say on Tuesday. I'm willing to hear him out, but it had better be good.

As far as the economic policies go, it's safe to say that he's gotten some bad advice and made some poor decisions, and people are rightfully pissed. I freely admit that he's got a lot more info in front of him than I do, and he's unquestionably smarter than I am. I wish people would channel their anger and abolish lobbyists and special interest groups. Let's take congress back.

Lastly, he didn't get us into this cluster-fuck of an economic mess. Thank Clinton and W for that one. I think Poppa is just tryin to keep the plates in the air and keep the economy from collapsing. Plus, Greenspan kept rates too low for too long.

im sure its not easy being the president. i am also a little disappointed in your post. I recently began to read and enjoy your blog. Usually i find your point of view to be interesting but this time im a little troubled.

Some thoughts on your post:

Our country and our middle class has been getting fucked, trained on for years. For the last 30 years since Reagan became president. This is when regulation began being stripped away. This when FDR's New Deal, which got us out of the depression, began to be purposely and systematically destroyed by both parties.

Look at California as an example. The UC system used to be FREE to California residents. Governor Reagan put an end to that.

The Democrats, in order to win, after 12 years of Reagan and Bush 1, basically became Republican lite. Nixon's domestic spending policies were more "liberal" and his economic policies imposed more regulations than Clintons. In fact, Nixon championed public health care and Ted Kennedy cockblocked it - something Kennedy said was the biggest regret of his political career. Clinton continued to deregulate under the premise that financial institutions would "self-regulate" - akin to crack addicts self regulating their crack consumption in a crack house.

George W Bush was and continues to be a monumental disaster for this country. Bush invaded Afghanistan legitimately and Iraq illegitimately. These wars are HIS wars. Just as WW 2 was FDR's war - No one thinks Truman WW2.

Bush went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 - 8 years ago. WW2, our whole world at war, lasted 6 years in comparison.

We had Bin Laden cornered in Tora Bora and the Bush led military blundered it. This war, our involvement in it, Bin Laden, the Taliban - all this shit should be over.

But no, lets invade Iraq... Talk about Daddy issues.

Using Vietnam as historical comparison -- It would be like if we had beaten the Viet Cong, then went and started a false premise war in Thailand which we also fuck up, all while the Viet Cong were taking Vietnam over again.

Obama came into office with the economy falling off the cliff, and two unresolved failing wars. I agree with you on escalating in Afghanistan. It is a bad move. The problem is that we can't just invade two countries and then pick up and bail. That is why Bush and his government should be held accountable for these strategic fuck ups.

To his credit, Obama campaigned on "winning" the war in Afghanistan so this is not a flip flop. Also to his credit, Obama was one of the few Senators against going to war in Iraq.

Obama has been president for less than one year. He has had his shit pushed in on many fronts. Health care, the economy, the wars -- these are all massive issues, all with powerful forces that have major opposition to change. The kind of folks who would gladly put a bullet in a President's head to prevent that change.

The problem with Obama is that he has not shown or grown the balls to truly confront the forces and systems that have been eroding our country. Lincoln did. FDR did. The nation's leading industrialists tried to overthrow FDR when he began to implement the New Deal. They even enlisted a General to attempt it. FDR called them into the oval office and told them he would have them tried and hung for treason. He also ordered the congressional hearings on this sealed so the public wouldn't lose faith in our business institutions.

Shane, there's a reason you believed in Obama -- and those reasons go beyond Obama.

Don't give that up.

You called a black man the n-word? What the hell is wrong with you?

Anonymous said...

you may not be racist, but you really need to rethink your ideas on race. this is really sad. it is not that you don't like what he is doing right now, its that you feel the need to bring his race into it. if you were talking about a white person you would never describe them that way. a white person is just a person, but a black person is a BLACK person. theres i something off in that, and you may want to think about that. or you may not... i follow your blog occasionally and find you entertaining....this just really shocked me....wow...

I cannot believe you would stoop so low as to call the president of the united states the n word. This is the last time i ever come here and read anything you post. I see your true colors are now coming through. There is never ever a situation that warrants that type of language. you are phony. I see you are one of those people that think the presidency is a microwave lunch, or fast food. everything is instant and now. i love how disappointed you are after 11 months in office. I 'm sure you voted and donated to defeat prop 8. I'm also sure you called your local congressman and senators to support health care.
Funny, cowards like you shout about change and do nothing about it. MLK did not match alone to get civil rights in this country. he had the "active" support of people that believed in his dreams. Any lastly when you start or end a statement defending yourself as not racist....you need to look in the mirror and meet yourself.
I wish i could un-know a person...i am so dissappointed in you!

take this to heart....

i hope at some point you make a concerted effort to think critically about the language you choose to use, and the context surrounding the language you use. not because you have a platform and a fair amount of readers, but because it completely renders your argument useless when you attached oppressive language to your statements- with clearly negative overtones attributed to it. do you have some valid points? sure. but it's also called your own character into question by many readers- which i'm sure you did not intend.

be clear.... if race was not an issue, you would have chose to use a different word. period. think about that for a second and reflect on the word you used and the context surrounding the word you used. the fact that you recognized the "n-word"'s connection to race by saying it's not about color and later calling him a black bullshitter instead of just a bullshitter, shows that the color of his skin does have "shit to do with shit"- on a deeper level. instead you used highly racialized words and strung together sentences to describe a man you are lashing out against and follow it with "I'm not racist".

i'm not saying you're a racist but i am asking you to interrogate your own relationship with race in a more meaningful way. beyond your friends, the kids you coach, the relationships you have with black people in your life..... examine your relationship with race and the language you use.

If we're going to open the dialogue and engage the topic of race in a meaningful way-- as you have attempted to do in the past, it is time to really..... REALLY reflect on how you are implicated in power and oppression. we are all implicated on some level and the more we question our own implications, the better we are for it.

language absolutely matters my friend.

If you would've just called him black fine that's what he is but you were calling him a nigga which is wrong. I understand some people don't mind being called that name but unless that person tells you it's cool, it's not. You just called the president the N word!
I get it, you believed in him and he let you down but using words like that makes your argument so much more weak and your opinion so much less valid. Seeing the world for all of its diversity is a beautiful thing and not being blind to colour is obviously a part of that but it feels more in my opinion like you're throwing stones.

Shane said...

I think it's important that we break down your commentary, and the commentary of everyone else into sections, because tackling this all at once would be an impossible task.

So, let's just start with the "hot button" issue: The N-Word. You used it. It's use was questionable. I regret that you used it, but only because I think it gave people a reason to divert from the real issue, and attack your character.

Anyone who attacked your interpersonal relationship skills is sorely lacking in argumentative tact and meaning. Any people who did this discounted themselves and their argument. This isn't about your ability to maintain relationships with women. As far as I'm concerned, those are more complex than international politics anyway.

Now, the REAL issue: Obama and his "marketing" campaign, the subsequent failures of his tenure, and what really needs to be happening.

When Obama ran for office, he didn't have to deal with "real" politics. It was just a contest to see who could package themselves the best. He won. His "change" plan seemed viable, but if you took the time to look at what he was planning on doing, it wasn't much different than what Senator Clinton was doing. (Ahem, Sec. of State Clinton.)

So, Mr. Powers, YOU got sold, but Republicans like myself that were the swing votes (I voted for Obama as well) were really only voting against McCain. Looking back at it, I do regret that decision.

The "Economic Stimulus Plan" was not something I ever foresaw being passed. It was a "change" in the face of every logical idea. We just loaned ourselves further into debt. Instead of tightening our spending and doing what needed to be done, Democrats voted our country further into debt.

I don't place all this blame on Obama, as I believe the package was an idea that was pushed onto him. I.e. "We (Dems) got you elected, now it's time for you to do what WE really want you to do." In modern politics, there is no escaping the puppetry. You were naive to believe Obama would be the exception to the rule.

To actually fix this country, we need to leave Iraq and Afghanistan. We can't afford to fight two wars right now. President Obama isn't in control though - he's at the mercy of defense contractors like KBR, that contributed immensely to connecting him with the "right" people.

To fix this country, we actually need to begin paying DOWN our national debt. That's what NEEDS to happen. Unfortunately, Obama keeps reaching into the "Magic Box of Democratic Economic Ideas" that don't really work. You can't "spend yourself out of debt", the way the stimulus package was sold to Americans.

Unless every single law of economics doesn't apply (they still do), Obama's economic policies are going to fail. He needs to do what Clinton did - pay down the debt. Period. That's how we "fix" our economy. We've got roughly four years to do it before we experience a REAL economic collapse, and I just don't think he'll do it.

Obama cares about being popular. Not actually fixing anything. As far as your "facts" about tripling the national debt - that's not his fault. That's been 14 years in the making. (And he didn't triple it. It's grown 10% in one year - most of that being momentum from President Bush.)

He inherited two wars.

He inherited $10 Trillion in debt.

He inherited an American economy suffering from the effects of globalization.

This isn't all Obama. It's just his set of problems to fix. He just doesn't know how to fix them. And neither does Tim Geithner. Nor does anyone else in his cabinet. They only know how to "change". They never said it would be a "change" for the good. They just said change.

So "change" we'll have.

I have a few comments here:
FeistySheila: How exactly are people pacifists from being annoyed that Shane used language that they were pissed about? It isn't beside the point it is part of the point. He can hate him all he wants but it's fucked to say shit like that.
Whoever added the relationship comments into this conversation lost any point they had to make by personally attacking Shane.
Everyone who attacks the anonymous commenters is just as much chickens because you ignore what they have to say and discount there validity by only the fact that don't have a name. Not everyone can post true feelings on things like this because of jobs.
I think alot of people are overly protective of SHane when he can obviously speak for himself!

Kate said...

Lots to think about...

Obama has the toughest job in America. The fact people WANT that responsibility is amazing to me. Deep issues and need for power that I could never understand.

That said, he did inherit quite a shit-show. I hope that he surrounds himself with smart people and I hope he comes through.

At the end of the day, Obama is still > Sarah Palin. Screw the marketing campaign, that woman decided this election.

Sidebar:

It is crazy (and immature) that people attack other people's "comments" on this website. It is also funny that the same people defending Shane's right to have an opinion/speak his mind are telling the "haters" they can't have an opinion/speak their mind. Wake up.

I don't think that Mr. Powers meant to use that term in a derogatory way, but as a response to the grass roots campaign run by President Obama which made us feel as those we were comrades, or maybe even homies.

Maybe not the PC choice,

But it was most likely meant to garner a polarized response among the readers, to reflect upon the course of change our country, by voting in one of the most prolific and historically diverse political races, chose to embark upon.

We can still involve ourself in the challenge of protecting our rights as a beautiful mixture of citizens who, with different, thoughts, ideas and perhaps skin color can all define ourselves as, Americans.

And we can take back our happiness from an oppressive system by participating in government, which even on the most local level, has a tremendous influence in our lives.

It's simpler than you think. Go online to your local town leadership sites. See where your tax money is going. If you don't agree, get out there and raise awareness and petition for change.

Talk about the issues that are dear to you. Understand, why and how they operate. Focus your thoughts on your definition of fairness and compare them to how they operate in our society.

We all have to do something if we want to succeed as the glorious society we intend to be.

It's the American Dream and our forefather who imagined our country did not sit idly by.

And we do have to have HOPE, that message is strong.

Thank you President Obama.

oh and p.s. as a black women i wish i could give you a hug for having the balls to be a white guy and call him that. its exactly what he is.

Anonymous said...

To the anonymous commenter above this,

He obviously is not an "ignorant mother fucker" and we are not dumbasses.

Let me make some more corrections for you.
-It should be "everyone is making me puke..."
-It should be "He is a fucking..." and "having" (you are forgetting your Gs)
-the proper spelling is "believing"
-"doesnt" and "its" need apostrophes before the S
-"role" not "roll"
-don't capitalize "president" unless you are addressing President Obama
-should be "man is" not "mans"
-"he could not care less" is totally different than "he could care less". You probably intended to use the former.

So please do not call the rest of us and our president dumbasses until you can fix your own shit. It only emphasizes that the presidents before Obama failed you in your education.

elizagee said...

Please look at the history of presidency in general. This man was handed the worst set of circumstances (arguably in the history of the United States) and 10 months later when he hasn't accomplished what YOU believe he should you're calling him names.

YOU are why people fear for his life. YOU who go directly to using his appearance (the color of his skin) to berate him are what makes me afraid for this country.

THIS is what happens everytime there's a new President.

I could argue ever single point with you, but it's not worth it.

I can't help but point out that the "debt" of which you refer happened mostly on the last president's watch. The stimulus first passed on his watch, remember? McCain stoped his campaign to rush to Washington to 'fix' the economy. He started and spent the first half of the $ and left out some important safegaurds.

We spent billions of dollars on the war in Iraq that the last administration kept "off the books" by using emergency funding measures. Just because you didn't know it existed doesn't mean all that money wasn't spent and is not a LARGE part of the debt.

So when this guy puts the true information out there you call him a liar and say he tripled the debt. It's not so, he just included ALL the bills (i.e. funding the war) - the last administration did not. He didn't have to do that, obviously it's not politically popular but he did it because it's the truth and the right thing to do.

I see by your apology that you've taken at least one breath but take another- look at history. Check out how the Iraq war was funded. Just check the facts.

I'm against war in every form, but, I'd much rather go after those who came after us than a country that did not. Now at least our young men and women are fighting a war on terrorists that have attacked civilian targets over and over and not a "war on terror". Newsflash- there is terror all over the world. This "war on terror" is never going to be won. (there will always be bullies that "terrorize" to gain and retain power) But maybe just maybe the war on these terrorists can be won.

I think we know someone in common that works in DC these days ask him. He'll tell you.

I certainly wish you had not used your voice in this way. To incite hate because of the color of his skin is so dangerous. You must be smart enough to know, recovering racist that you are, that the real crazies only see what they want - color. Don't give them an excuse.

Be careful who you rile up with your opinions they might just be armed to the teeth and hate this president ENTIRELY because of the color of his skin.

I hope you'll breathe first next time....
